Info About the Service

At South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust (SLAM) we provide focused inpatient care for female patients to address their specific mental health needs.

We provide Acute and Psychiatric Intensive Care services across our four sites, in Croydon, Lambeth, Lewisham and Southwark.

Various social factors put women at greater risk of poor mental health than men. However, women's readiness to talk about their feelings and their strong social networks can help protect their mental health.

Women are particularly exposed to some of the factors that increase the risk of poor mental health because of the role and status that they typically have in society. The traditional roles for women from some ethnic groups living in the UK can increase their exposure to these risks.

At South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust we provide two types focused inpatient care: Acute wards offer psychiatric assessment, care and treatment in hospital, which helps reduce risk to self and others and the Psychiatric and intensive wards offer care for people who have severe and on-going mental illnesses whose behaviour makes them unsafe, either to themselves or others, and who cannot be treated in an open ward.

We’ll empower and enable you to rise to the unique challenges that you will face on a female ward and gain invaluable experience and transferable skills.

By becoming a knowledge expert of knowledge of women's health issues by learning from some of the world’s leading experts in mental health; understanding the impact of a patient's illness to their family and their role as a mother, if they have children and address safeguarding issues if they are the primary care giver.  You will also address safeguarding issues and may need to liaise with social services.

As well as a robust support package, you’ll benefit from regular individual and group supervision and an appraisal, and access to a Preceptorship and Mentorship to help you develop.  Our 9 month Preceptorship programme is for newly qualified nurses and nurses that have not completed this type of programme and helps a nurse to fully embed their skills.  Once the programme is completed you will receive an increment and increase and you will also receive your annual increment.

We are committed to helping to develop the people that come to work with us.  We know that the Trust can only be as good as the people who work here and we’ll invest in you to maximise that potential.  That’s why we really welcome and value people so highly.
