Info About the Service

Our Psychiatric Intensive Care Units (PICU) wards support and care for some of the most vulnerable service users from our community and offer a highly challenging environment within a fast paced and diverse work setting. PICU is an exciting service to be part of we work within specialist multi-disciplinary team, delivering high quality, intensive care to patients experiencing acute mental illness. We want our nurses to learn and develop their skills, including working with and supporting clients with severe mental illness and widely varying, complex needs, risk assessment and risk management.

Adults in crisis are admitted to the wards and are supported by a large staff team of nurses, doctors, health care assistants and psychiatrists. There is a wide remit for a nursing role within PICU which requires networking and collaborating with numerous internal and external stakeholders.

Why Work Here

There is a high level of opportunity to develop as a band 5 nurse we offer additional training that is specialised to our service giving you risk assessment and risk management skills which are invaluable in the mental health profession. There is also the opportunity to work across the other PICU sites in order to gain further experience of working in different areas and meeting staff from the other teams. We held a PICU Band 5 away day this year which brought all Band 5 nurses across the PICU service together to meet and learn from each other and to develop best practice.

As well as a robust support package, you’ll benefit from regular individual and group supervision and an appraisal, and access to a Preceptorship and Mentorship to help you develop.  Our 9 month Preceptorship programme is for newly qualified nurses and nurses that have not completed this type of programme and helps a nurse to fully embed their skills.  Once the programme is completed you will receive an increment and increase and you will also receive your annual increment.

We are committed to helping to develop the people that come to work with us.  We know that the Trust can only be as good as the people who work here and we’ll invest in you to maximise that potential.  That’s why we really welcome and value people so highly. In short, if you’ve got what it takes we’d be delighted for you to come and work with us.
